Colan – Period 2

Open Ice By: Pat Hughes

Nick Taglio is the hockey team all-star. Nick definitely has a bright future in the sport of hockey….. Until he gets a possible career ending injury. Is the only reason why Nick wants to play for love or so he can be back on top with his old fast paced social life? But the big question is will Nick ever get another chance to play hockey again? The people who affect Nicky Tag are his girlfriend Devin, his family, his team, and his best friend Griff. Nick starts to realize that hockey is his life and that without hockey his life is worthless. In this passage it paints a vivid picture in the reader’s mind of what it is like to step out on the ice. But just when you think everything is going ok things get worse at a blink of an eye. I chose this passage because it shows Nicks roller coaster life with ups and downs. Because throughout the whole book Nick is up and feeling great and all of a sudden he is down and it is all taken away from him but it is his choice weather or not he gets back up. I recommend this book to everyone. This book teaches that you never know when everything will be taken away. If you think this book is only for people who like “hockey” you’re wrong. This book has little hockey caught up in all the drama. Hockey is just the background of the main characters life. I think that in some way everyone can relate to Nick in some way. This book is for guys because it has the thrilling action of sports. But then it is for girls because it has school gossip and popularity. I would rate this book 10 out of 10.

This is a fast read. I finished it in one week .I couldn’t put it down Pat Hughes makes you think that Nick is real. He makes it seem so real you can really feel the pain that Nick experiences throughout the story. But the real question is…will Nick ever play again??? Nick ends up getting dumped by Devin. His best friend Griff quits hockey. Nick gets tolled that he will never play hockey ever again. He skates on a pond by himself, no stick, no puck, no net. In the “dream” it’s just him and there’s the open ice.
