Richie Perry, an eighteen year old African-American teen, is sent off to fight off the Vietcong in Vietnam. He meets soldiers with similar but different skin color. Richie and his squad were engaged in multiple havoc battles and pacifying missions in order to take over land against the Vietcong. Things begin to change for Rickie during the book. His new objective in Vietnam was to stay alive.
Everyone wants to be a hero and have their name down in the history books. Heroism is a highly respected aspect that is within everybody’s soul. Lieutenant Carroll, the leader of Richie’s squad, risks his life and died for his team. He was highly revered and admired by the men which inspired them to be more like him. Richie claims that he is not a hero, but he shows many heroic actions. He refuses to take the offers to stand back in a mission and goes out. The moral of these souldiers were highly increased thanks to Lieutenant Carroll and heroism changed the outcome of the team.
