Brown-Period 5

The story Boot Camp is about a troubled boy who is sent off to attend Lake Harmony where it is a ruthless to attempt to break down a trouble kid and then rebuild them into a model citizen. However, they have the parent’s consent to inflict whatever physical pain needed to “help” the kid. The main character is a boy named Garret who is very smart, but he isn’t the perfect image in his parent’s eyes. Garret soon finds out that Lake Harmony isn’t the place he wants to spend two years of his life in. He hears of a small plot to escape, but if caught the consequences would be unbearable.

Right from the start I was drawn into the story by how the counselors humiliated Garret. He is about my age and I could relate to his feelings when he is asked to do things to embarrass himself. For instance he is asked to admit to being in a relationship with his teacher, who is eight years older than him, in front of his peers. I was shocked by how tough the consequences were. Like sometimes kids have to spend days in a empty concrete room, and they are forced to lie on their stomachs with their hands behind their backs. I really wanted to keep reading to learn how this Garret gets his way out of Lake Harmony, and also how he grows as a person.

Brown- Period 5

Twilight is a fantasy story about a normal girl falling in love with a vampire. She starts out by moving in with her dad and starting a new school. She is not excited about either, but does it so her mom could be happy. She meets Edward, the vampire, and falls in love with him. Little does she know that he wants to drink her blood. This book is a great story about forbidden love and a great action.

I think the part of Twilight that is most appealing is the fact that Edward and Bella are in love but it is so dangerous. It makes the book more suspenseful in how they get over the fact that Edward is a vampire. Bella shows that she doesn’t care what Edward is, and that sometimes makes Edward

Brown Period 5

Only sixteen years old and locked up for a crime he committed, or did he. His name is Steve Harmon and this is his story about how is put on trial for Murder. This book takes place in the jail/ court room, played out as a movie, or at least that is how Steve see’s it. Between the lawyers and the people on trial this book keeps you guessing about what is going to happen next! “ They take away your shoelaces and your belt so you cant kill yourself no matter how bad it is”. In order to find out what is so bad your just going to read Monster by Walter Dean Myers.

I decided to focus on Steve’s notes because that way I can really try and understand what he is going through. “ Sometimes I feel like I have walked into the middle of a movie” this is the quote Steven has chosen to use to express’s his feeling about being in jail. Everything is so unreal/ real at the same time. In between court and jail time, Steve express’s his feeling thought NOTES. These notes really made me feel as if I could be right there with him. “I’ve never seen my father cry before” to have a sixteen year old being faced to go to jail for up to 25 years hurts his parents so much. He feels as if his own father is starting to see him as a monster. He talks a lot about how people get into fights “I think I finally understand why there are so many fights. In here all you have going for you is the little surface stuff, how people look at you and what they say” for a sixteen year old to be mixed in with all these older people, it really makes this book appealing to see what happens when you live in jail with a bunch of strangers.

Brown Period 5

My book is The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult. It’s about a fourteen-year-old girl named Trixie whose world comes crashing down when she gets raped by her boyfriend Jason. Her father Daniel is a comic book writer working on a comic about Dante’s nine levels of hell. Laura, Trixie’s mom and a well liked college professor, loses her family’s trust. Trixie and her family struggle to overcome this traumatic event while failing to convince Mike Bartholomew, their defendant, that Trixie did actually get raped due to several other factors the night of her rape. After Trixie, Jason, and Zephyr’s stories are all inconsistent, the investigators are at a loss as to who to trust. Jason’s life gets messed up all because of miscommunication and his compassion for Trixie, and he doesn’t think he deserves it. However, one event makes everything even worse for him and everyone else. Anyone could relate to this story because it’s about a teenage girl faced with a midlife crisis and is forced to grow up all in one night and how her family deals with it.

This book is definitely not disappointing because it remains realistic throughout the whole book. It is very powerful because girls between the ages of sixteen and nineteen are most prone to rape and it could help the huge number of teens girls who are afraid to speak out do so. It would be appealing to both parents and teenagers.

Brown- Period 3

Meredith Shale is a fifteen-year-old teenager. She is a bothersome daughter, a worrisome girlfriend, and now a fearful victim. Growing up, Meredith is raped by her father and he is sentenced to prison. When Meredith verbalizes the event, her mother turns her back. Her father is released from prison after only three of the nine sentenced years, and expects everything to be the same as how he had left it, including his defenseless “Chirp,” but he is wrong. “Chirp is dead,” Meredith justifies after she is told to “give her old man a break.” “You killed her, and now you have to deal with me because I’m what’s left” (Wiess 19). Meredith will do anything to expose her father’s “mistake,” as her mother calls it, and get him back to where he belongs.

In Such a Pretty Girl, Meredith continually uses numbers to convey her emotions. At first, I couldn’t understand why Meredith found such a comfort in numbers. To me, numbers are just a counting system, a defined set of rules. These rules shouldn’t be broken, but if they are, the inaccuracy will eventually become evident. To Meredith, numbers are one of the only things she can actually “count” on. Meredith takes comfort in numbers because she has learned to depend on their consistency. With numbers, rules cannot be broken. With numbers, lines cannot be crossed without the error being apparent. This, I noticed, is contrary to the actual crime Meredith’s father committed. He had crossed the line, he had broken the defined rules, and not even Meredith’s mother could see the awfully apparent “miscalculation”. I feel the use of numbers so powerfully tells readers exactly what Meredith couldn’t tell her mother. Meredith hopes that by disguising the issue, her readers will recognize the obvious metaphor between numbers and principles that shouldn’t be broken. Ironically, after all numbers and their meanings are expressed, Meredith’s dad tells her “I taught you how to hit a fastball and how to count, […] you might want to remember that the next time you break the rules” (Wiess 55-56).

I think that reason that Eclipse is such a big hit and a bestseller is the mix of romance, action, fantasy, and mystery that Stephenine Meyer some how manages to mix and put together all in one book, as well as the book series it’s self. At first glance Eclipse seems like another girly teenager romance book. But it’s this mix of action and romance put together and makes Eclipse such a big. It’s that feelings that there is so much going on in the plot that you just have to keep reading to see what happens in the end, or to find out if your predictions that you made before you started reading actually came true. Stephenine Meyer has brought a completely new outlook on how the world today describes vampires, werewolf, and a romance book it’s self.

Brown, 3rd Period

The book I chose to read is called The Jester by James Patterson. It is about a man named Hugh De Luc who lives in a small town called Veille du Père with is wife Sophie. He then heads off on a “Crusade” fighting for Christianity, though he did not believe in it. He was doing it so he and his wife could be free. When he came back, to his horror, he found out that attackers had raided his town looking for a priceless relic and killed his son that had been born while he was gone. They had also kidnapped his wife. Hugh now embarks on a journey to find his wife and get revenge on those who had done what they’d done to his friends and family.

My favorite part in the book, or the part that really got me up and reading, was the part where Hugh follows the path that the attackers took to find his dear Sophie. Along the way, he fights this boar that attacks him as he was laying to rest. In the end, he kills the boar and lies on the side of the road, waiting for God to take him. To his luck, a beautiful woman named Emilie, from the beautiful city called Boreè, and some of her riders, picked him up and brought him to their city to heal him. When Hugh woke up lying in a bed, he finally got his chance to meet Emilie, his savior. After they became close in a couple days, he told her what he was doing. She decided to help him, or give him a pretext. She took him to Boreè’s jester, Norbert. At first, Norbert didn’t see anything of Hugh. But after Hugh had shown Norbert one incredible trick, Norbert decided to train him. Hugh was ready after two weeks. He now wore a jester suit that was sewn by Emilie, and he heads to a city where his liege stays: Treille. His plan is to become the jester of Treille and sneak into the dungeon and look for Sophie. Little does he know, he’s about to encounter a lot more than he expects. And So will you.

My Sisters Keeper
In My Sisters Keeper, Anna Fitzgerald does not want to be her sisters’ donor anymore. (Her sister has APL, which is a type of leukemia.) All her life, her parents have made medical decisions for her and now she is ready to make them for herself. So, she finds a lawyer in the paper and asks him to file a case against her parents. At first, Mr. Alexander is hesitant at the idea, especially because Anna doesn’t have the money his clients normally pay, but he is sympathetic towards Anna and accepts the case. The main conflict of this novel is figuring out who is responsible for the medical decisions for Anna. It could be her lawyer, her parents, her sister, the doctor, or Anna herself. The conflict could be solved in many ways, but which one will the judge choose?
My favorite part about this novel is how Anna, who is 13 years old, speaks up for herself and her ill sister Kate. Until you’re 18 years old, your parents legally have control over you. Anna doesn’t want her sister to die, but at the same time, she understands. It’s hard for her to live a normal life because she feels like she has to be there for her sister in case something happens. Kate is also tired of all these surgeries and doesn’t want anymore of them. They know their parents will never agree to stop fighting the APL (a type of Leukemia) so the only way they could stop them was if Anna stopped being Kate’s donor. Anna was very brave by going against her parents in court to make her sister happy. Children and teens should stand up for themselves because only they know when enough is enough.

Twilight is a “love story with bite.” It is about a girl who moves to Forks, Washington because her mom has a boyfriend who wants to go on the road for a bit, so she decides to stay with her father. She starts going to a new high school and meets new friends. But, there was one thing that kept her thinking all the time. It was Edward. Edward was a vampire and he never craved anyone’s blood as much he did for Bella’s. Eventually Bella and Edward fall in love, but he has to be careful with her because first of all, if he gets too carried away, he can destroy her with his enormous strength. Second, if she is exposed greatly while she is with him, it can cause attention to other vampires in their community.

I believe that having a human in love with a vampire and vice-versa makes this book appealing to me. This is something someone would never believe or think of happening. This shows that everything is possible if you put the effort into it. Also, in the novel Edward is very caring and watches over Bella, which also makes me more drawn to the book. It shows how great love can be and how beautiful it is when two people share something special.
