Have you heard of a virtual library? Maybe you have heard library staff buzzing about something called Shelfari. Anyone can create a virtual book shelf and the library staff are doing just that. There are several similar tools out there, however, I like Shelfari because it is easy to use and free. Virtual book shelves can be used in many ways. Personally, I like to keep track of what I have read. I was using the old-fashioned index card box to keep an alphabetical record of book titles and notes to help me with book talks. Shelfari now saves me time because I can search for the books I have read and Shelfari places an image of the books on a cute virtual shelf. My shelf can be arranged by title, author, date added, opinions and rating. I can rate my books with stars or I can pick my top ten. Tags organize my books by the subjects I choose. What power! This is not just for geeky librarians. You can link to friends who also use Shelfari and see what is on their shelves. This is a great resource for book clubs or for anyone looking for a good read. Check out the Staff Picks link on the blog and see what the library staff has read. Just click on the name of a staff member and see her shelf. A new Student Picks section is now available for any Stevenson student who wants to participate. I’d like to start a Faculty/Staff section as well.

She often wrote that it was a great comfort to her while she was in hiding from the Nazis. The tree is now over 100 years-old and quite diseased. Click on the link above to listen to an audio news report from NPR. It includes a reading from the diary that mentions Anne’s beloved tree.
